I am the 4th grade teacher, assistant principal, and, in conjunction with MANY others, one of the IT people.
We have 2 traditional computer labs with about 30 desktops, a COW with 20 netbooks, 13 Chromebooks (Samsung $249), at least 2 desktops in each classroom, and are proud users of the Google Apps for Education service.
We have approximately 100 students from PreK-8.
Several reasons I am here for ideas:
We have a real IT nightmare as we look at the upcoming Windows XP situation since all of our desktops and netbooks run XP!
Adding all these devices (and teachers with smartphones) we are using more IP addresses than our current router can support.
We use a traditional Windows Server for centralized storage and nothing else. We are looking at getting a NAS device to handle the storage issue and to act as the DHCP so we can support all the new devices that we are adding.
Our WIFI network is made up of 4+ dissimilar SSID devices, with limited range and poor connectivity. This will have to be an issue that is dealt with when we move over to a NAS.
We have VERY limited monetary resources for technology and we are looking to make every dollar spent, stretch a really long way.
